Woman dies in Southfield condo fire
A Southfield woman is dead but an older child managed to escape a condo fire Sunday morning in the area of 10 Mile and Telegraph.
The fire at Greenbrooke Park Homes was called in at about 5:05 a.m., said Southfield Fire Department Battalion Chief Greg Gekiere. A neighbor called in the fire and reported that a woman and her dog were inside.
Firefighters arrived to find an "aggressive fire" coming from the second floor of the unit, Gekiere said.
The second floor of the home collapsed. The woman, whose age and identity were not given, was killed.
A unit next door also was damaged by the fire, which ripped through a shared wall, broke glass, and blackened the area above its front door. A second-floor window in that unit was broken.
Gekiere said an older child escaped the fire, although that child's gender, identity and age were not immediately known. What became of the dog, Gekiere did not know.
Southfield Fire Department is working to determine the cause of the fire, while the the Oakland County Medical Examiner will determine the victim's cause and manner of death.
On Sunday, neighbors displaced by the fire made plans for their next move at the condo clubhouse. Firefighters passed out bottled water to mourners who arrived at the scene.
Water to adjoining units was still cut off several hours after the fire, residents said.
