A Rochester Hills man was charged Wednesday after allegedly telling Oakland County Sheriff’s officials that he fatally shot his wife early Monday.

Shawn Wheeler, 39, was charged with first-degree premeditated murder of his wife, Cory Ann Ehlers, 41, in 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills. The charge carries a life sentence. He also was charged with possession of a firearm. He was denied bond.

Shaun Wheeler allegedly told sheriff deputies he shot his wife.

Deputies were called to a home around 10 a.m. in the 3400 block of Emmons Avenue after a man found his sister-in-law dead on a blood-covered couch, investigators said in a statement.

“The caller further advised his sister-in-law and her husband are currently going through a bad divorce,” the release said.

Upon arrival, Ehlers appeared to have been shot, sheriff’s officials said. An autopsy was pending.

While detectives were at the scene, Wheeler went to the city sheriff’s substation “and told the front desk deputy that he just killed his wife,” authorities said.

Wheeler was arrested without incident. He remains in the Oakland County Jail after his arraignment in front of Judge Lisa Asadoorian. A probable-cause conference was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. March 22 before Asadoorian. The preliminary exam was scheduled for 8: 30 a.m. March 29.
