Ferndale High School and Ferndale Middle School "suddenly" closed Thursday morning, after a third-party employee who works on the campus allegedly told a loved one of their plan to "potentially harm themselves" there, said Ferndale Public Schools Superintendent Dania Bazzi in a letter to the school community.

Ferndale Police Department did sweep the building, the letter said, but "due to the size of the building that search could not be completed in time for us to open school today."

The employee was found and is OK, said Bill Good, spokesman for Ferndale Public Schools.

The letter reads, in full:

Ferndale family,

This morning we had to suddenly close the Ferndale High School and Ferndale Middle School campus. This unexpected closure was made with an abundance of caution.

Last night, an employee of a third-party company that works with Ferndale Schools, informed a loved one of their intent to potentially harm themselves on the Ferndale High School / Ferndale Middle School campus. Due to the nature of these circumstances Ferndale Police arrived to conduct a thorough sweep of the building. Unfortunately due to the size of building that search could not be completed in time for us to open school on time today. The employee has since been found at their home.

I want to be very clear, there was no specific threat to the students, staff, or community of Ferndale. We simply closed Ferndale Middle and High School today due to an abundance of caution.

I want to thank the Ferndale Police, our staff, students, and families for their incredible flexibility during this incident.

Due to the nature of this situation, we will not be commenting further.

In Education,
Dania H. Bazzi, PhD
Superintendent
