Michigan State Police are investigating athree-car fatal crash on Interstate 696 at Dequindre in Macomb County.

Officials said the crash happened about 2:45 p.m. on the freeway's westbound lanes. The preliminary investigation shows the driver of a car ran out of gas and was parked on the right shoulder. His father brought him gas and was also parked on the shoulder.

As the driver was refilling his gas tank, another vehicle lost control, struck the driver, his vehicle and the father's vehicle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The father took the driver's child into his vehicle. The suspect driver has minor injuries.

That driver is in custody, police said, and speed appears to be a factor.

The freeway is now open at I-696 and 11 Mile Road.
