Truck driver who hit Clarkston building charged
Authorities have charged the truck driver whose vehicle ran into a building last Friday, officials said.
Robert Eckola, 52, of Oxford, was formally charged in court with reckless driving, they said. A judge set his bond $2,000 and scheduled his next court appearance for May 17.
If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, he faces 93 days in jail.
Police said Eckola was driving a 2011 Volvo tractor with two dirt-filled trailers on northbound Main in Clarkston at about 1:17 p.m. April 20 when he struck a Chevy Trailblazer and a Buick, then crashed into the Clarkston Village Dental Office.
Witnesses told investigators the driver appeared to run a red light at Main Street and Waldon Road "then went left of center to avoid a collision with traffic that had the green traffic signal," sheriff's officials said in a statement.
The drivers of the cars and one passenger reported minor injuries. Eckola sustained minor injuries and refused to be transported to a hospital.
He was cited for disregarding a traffic signal and released at the scene, county authorities said.
The building is home to five apartment units and a dentist office near the rear basement.
