A 19-year-old man was arrested Sunday after he was shot while trying to rob and shoot another man in Pontiac, police said.

Deputies with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office at 7 p.m. were called about a shooting at an apartment complex in the 700 block of Whittemore Street near Auburn Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Pontiac, according to authorities.

Police arrived to find the 19-year-old Pontiac man lying in the apartment complex's parking lot with a single gunshot to the leg.

He told deputies he was in the lot when an unknown man approached the victim to sell him marijuana. He told deputies he was offended by the proposition and began fighting with the suspect, officials said.

He also said that's when the suspect pulled out a gun and shot him, police said.

As the deputies spoke with the victim, they received information that a second man called police to report someone tried to rob him.

Deputies contacted the caller, a 23-year-old man who told them he was at the same parking lot earlier to sell someone marijuana. He also told deputies when he arrived at the lot, a man pulled out a gun and tried to rob him, police said.

He said he and the other man struggled over the pistol and the assailant was shot in the leg, authorities said.

He then told deputies he took the firearm from the other man and threw it into the courtyard before fleeing the scene, they said.

After speaking to witnesses and investigating, police determined the wounded man was responsible for the shooting, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital to be treated for his gunshot wound and a fractured femur, according to authorities.

Police searched for the weapon, but were unable to locate it, officials said.

They also said they continue to investigate the incident.
