Auburn Hills, an Oakland County suburb of about 23,000 residents, has hired Jeffery Baker, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement, to serve as its new police chief, the city announced Wednesday.

Baker's law enforcement career dates back to 1992, when he worked as a part-time police officer at three Macomb County communities: Richmond, New Haven and Chesterfield Township. The next year he joined the Port Huron Police Department, rising eventually from patrolman to police chief.

Baker succeeds retired chief Doreen Olko. He will start work on June 5, and will be officially sworn in at the June 11 city council meeting.
