Motorcyclist injured in crash on I-696 in Royal Oak
Royal Oak — A 49-year-old Detroit man was injured Tuesday evening when he crashed his motorcycle into a semi-truck on Interstate 696.
Michigan State Police said the incident occurred at 6:15 p.m. on eastbound I-696 and Campbell. Authorities said the motorcyclist lost control and went under the semi during the crash.
The motorcyclist has been transported to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition. Authorities previously reported the man had died.
"Further investigation revealed that it appears the motorcyclist lost control, dumped the bike resulting in the rider rolling underneath the semi-truck after striking it from the rear," according to an MSP tweet.
Police said it is likely the truck driver was not aware the crash occurred. Police located the driver and semi at the Mopar Chrysler Distribution Center in Centerline following a search.
The freeway, which was closed at Campbell and Hilton for several hours, reopened after 9 p.m. Tuesday.
State Police had no further information on the semi-truck or motorcyclist.
