Good Samaritan follows Pontiac thieves, leads police to stolen SUV
A good Samaritan who followed suspects accused of theft in Pontiac this week helped investigators solve two crimes at once, Oakland County officials announced Wednesday.
Deputies had sought several people after items were stolen at a Family Dollar store in the 1200 block of Baldwin about 8:40 a.m. Monday, the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
They caught a break when someone who spotted three people fleeing the store decided to trail their black 2015 Jeep Patriot in his car and called the sheriff’s communications center to detail where it headed, authorities wrote.
Deputies found the SUV abandoned on Stegman Lane, about a mile from the scene, and learned it had been previously reported stolen to the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies saw two of the suspects on West Fairmount Avenue and Cloverlawn. Both people, identified as Pontiac woman and a man, were taken into custody.
The Jeep driver was issued an appearance citation for retail fraud and held at the Oakland County Jail.
The front-seat passenger also was jailed on the same charge as well as an outstanding warrant for a probation violation from Oakland County Circuit Court.
