A 24-year-old Pontiac man drowned Monday afternoon in a dam near the Clinton River, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday.

The drowning happened about 1:40 p.m. at the Dawson Mill Pond Dam, inside Beaudette Park, which is north of the intersection of Telegraph and Orchard Lake Road.

A witness told police that he and Jajuan Darnell Gabriel had entered the Clinton River to pull trash and old fishing lures from the water.

But after entering the water, Gabriel "began struggling and yelling for help," and the current was too strong for the witness to go in after him, so he called 911.

The sheriff's dive team and Waterford Regional Fire Department firefighters responded, and the firefighters located and recovered Gabriel's body. They transported him to McLaren-Oakland Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
