A Fourth of July outing turned into a rescue mission when an overloaded ski boat carrying 11 people capsized in West Bloomfield Township, Oakland County Sheriff's officials said.

The Malibu was on Pine Lake about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday when another vessel passed, "throwing a heavy wake" and overwhelming it, authorities said in a statement.

An investigation revealed the boat  was overloaded by about 450 pounds, according to the release.

Fearing the vessel would sink, the occupants donned life jackets and dove into the water.

A sheriff's Marine Unit patrol boat and several other boaters helped pull the occupants from the water. The group included five West Bloomfield women and six men from Taylor, Macomb, Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, Ann Arbor and Clawson, all in their 20s.

The Marine Unit towed the disabled boat back to its dock.  All 11 passengers were returned to shore.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the incident, investigators said Thursday.
