An Orion Township man is in critical condition after his girlfriend ran over him with a car Wednesday night, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies and Orion Township firefighters were called to the 500 block of Mayer Court at about 8:54 p.m. Wednesday to respond to reports of a domestic violence incident.

Public safety officials arrived and found a man lying underneath the front passenger side of a red Dodge Dart, according to police.

Firefighters used a jack to lift up the car and free the man. They administered aid before taking him to a hospital, officials said.

After a preliminary investigation, the deputies learned a 26-year-old Clarkston woman was fighting with her 28-year-old boyfriend. The woman told deputies her boyfriend assaulted her and she tried to leave the residence in her vehicle, police said.

As she drove away, the man jumped on to her vehicle's hood. The woman backed the vehicle up and struck a tree, which caused her boyfriend to fall to the ground, according to authorities.

The woman shifted gears, drove forward and ran over her boyfriend, police said. She immediately stopped the car when she realized the man was trapped under the vehicle, police said.

Deputies took the woman to a hospital to be treated for injuries she received in the altercation with her boyfriend. Officials said she was later released from the hospital.

Deputies continue to investigate the incident.
