A medic was stabbed in the neck Tuesday afternoon while attempting to give aid to a man found crawling out of the woods off Interstate 96 in Novi, Michigan State Police said.

The stabbing took place about 5:35 p.m. on I-96 at Meadowbrook. Medics were dispatched to help a man who was spotted crawling out of the woods.

But as medics loaded the man into an ambulance, he allegedly stabbed a male medic in the neck and attempted to stab a second medic.

The medics then pushed the suspect out of the ambulance and locked the doors behind him.

A Novi police officer who was in the area quickly arrested the man, who police believe suffers from mental illness. His age was not immediately available.

Both the medic and the suspect had to be transported to an area hospital for treatment, and both have since been released. But while the medic was able to return home, the suspect is lodged at Oakland County Jail, pending charges.
