Southfield has named two deputy police chiefs to be the acting heads of the department while the city searches for a permanent chief.

Deputy chiefs Nick Loussia and Brian Bassett were named acting chiefs by City Administrator Fred Zorn, effective Sept. 7.

Loussia will oversee the Investigations Division and Bassett will direct the Patrol Division.

Former Southfield police chief Eric Hawkins was hired as police chief of Albany, New York, in July.

“The Southfield Police Department continues to function extremely efficiently under the direction of these very competent acting chiefs while a national search remains active,” Zorn said in a statement. “We hope to be able to name a new permanent police chief as quickly as possible.”

Loussia has been with the Southfield Police Department since 1991, while Bassett joined the force in 1999.
