Oakland County Sheriff's officials say a routine traffic stop in Rochester Hills this week led to an unusual find: 88 pounds of marijuana.

A 2000 Chevrolet 1500 van was speeding near Auburn Road and Primrose Lane about 5:30 p.m. Thursday before deputies stopped it, investigators said in a statement.

A check with the state Law Enforcement Information Network showed the Michigan Secretary of State had cancelled the registration plate and the vehicle was unregistered, according to the release.

While searching the van, a deputy opened the side doors and spotted several large garbage bags and boxes inside the cargo area, authorities reported. Inspecting further, deputies found they held many packages containing what appeared to be marijuana.

The drugs were confiscated and the driver arrested.

The 53-year-old Madison Heights man was held at Oakland County Jail. He is expected to face arraignment at 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills on one count of felony deliver/manufacture marijuana over 5 kilograms.
