Gas leak closes Woodward in Berkley
Berkley —Consumers Energy stanched a gas leak Tuesday night at the intersection of 12 Mile Road and Woodward in Berkley after authorities diverted traffic and ordered evacuations, officials said.
The break occurred around 3:30 p.m. and led to a five-hour traffic closure of Woodward Avenue. The Berkley Department of Public Safety were asking motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area.
Consumers Energy was repairing the 6 inch high-pressure line and work was expected to continue overnight. The Oakland County Hazardous Materials Team was on the scene monitoring the air, officials said.
Officials said the immediate area had been evacuated.
Woodward Avenue and Telegraph will be open before 10 p.m. officials said. However, there will be lane closures on southbound Woodward at 12 Mile Road and eastbound 12 Mile Road at Woodward.
