A former Avondale High School coach and hall monitor has been charged with criminal sexual conduct for allegedly having relations with a student, police said Tuesday.

Corey Gonzales, 35, of Auburn Hills, has been charged in court with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, Auburn Hills police officials said. A magistrate at the 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills ordered Gonzales held on a $20,000 bond and scheduled his next court appearance for Nov. 13.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Police accuse Gonzales of having a sexual relationship with a student for two years. They said the victim in the case graduated from the high school in 2018.

Officials with the Avondale School District said Tuesday Gonzales resigned from his position at the school when the investigation into the accusations began.

"The district has fully cooperated with the Auburn Hills Police Department during the investigation into the allegations brought against Mr. Gonzales," they said in a statement. "As our students and staff are our first concern, the district trauma team has arranged support to assist anyone who feels they may need assistance in processing this information."
