Two women died Wednesday after their car plunged into a Waterford Township pond.

Autopsies are expected to be conducted Thursday, officials said.

First responders were called at about 11 a.m. Wednesday to a condominium complex near Pontiac Lake and Crescent Lake roads to respond to a report of a submerged Ford Escape, police said in a statement.

Firefighters extricated the vehicle's two occupants, an 81-year-old woman and her 56-year-old daughter, officials said. Both were disabled, they said.

Paramedics began efforts to revive the women and took them to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Police said an initial investigation shows an 83-year-old Waterford man had been driving the blue 2019 Escape with his spouse and daughter when he stopped in the parking lot near the 5000 block of Amhurst Court. He exited the vehicle and went inside a residence and left the transmission in drive, officials said.

The vehicle rolled forward and down a small embankment and went into a pond on the property, they said.

Initially, officials said the vehicle's passengers were a woman in her 70s and an adult female with a handicap.
