Royal Oak Township — After three men crashed into a Royal Oak Township motel room early Monday morning in a failed smash-and-grab targeting an ATM, police recovered their vehicle, but the men remain at large.

At about 4:20 a.m. Michigan State Police responded to a motel on the 11000 block of West Eight Mile, Lt. Mike Shaw, a state police spokesman and commander, wrote on Twitter.

A silver Dodge Durango had backed into the front of the motel.

Two men jumped out wearing dark-colored clothes, masks and gloves, and tried to lift the ATM into their vehicle.

But it was too heavy, so they left it.

The men returned to the Durango and the driver pulled out of the motel.

A front desk clerk at the motel suffered a minor injury, but refused medical treatment, Shaw wrote.

Detroit Police Department later recovered the Durango.

State police ask anyone with information on the incident to call the Metro North Post at 248-584-5740.
