Pence, Eric Trump to stump in Michigan; Biden hits Ohio

Staff and wire reports

President Donald Trump's campaign will send two of its highest profile representatives next week to Michigan, a state the Republican won by 10,704 votes in 2016.

Vice President Mike Pence will visit Grand Rapids Wednesday, one day after Trump's second son, Eric, is scheduled to stop in Oakland County at a gun shop on Tuesday, three weeks before the Nov. 3 election.

Democratic presidential candidate former Vice President Joe Biden says he is "not a fan" of court packing.

Former Vice President Joe Biden will travel to nearby Ohio this week, making stops in Toledo and Cincinnati Monday afternoon. Doug Emhoff, the husband of Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris will be in Michigan the same day.

Biden'sremarks in Toledo will focus on building the economy and Cincinnati's visit will focus on voter mobilization, according to a press release.

Emhoff will be visit Huntington Woods, where he'll participate in a Jewish Americans for Biden event with Democratic U.S. Rep. Andy Levin of Bloomfield Township, and Brighton, where he'll participate in a canvass kickoff.

He'll end the day in Lansing, where he'll participate in a voter mobilization event with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing.

Eric Trump will host a "Make American Great Again!" event at Huron Valley Guns in New Hudson. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the rally will begin at noon. Pence will speak at Lacks Enterprises, Inc., where doors will open at 10:30 a.m. for the 12:30 p.m. event.

Eric Trump, the son of President Donald Trump, speaks at a campaign rally for his father in Monroe, N.C., Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020.

According to a press release from the campaign, they will "share President Donald J. Trump's Make America Great Again agenda with the American people."

The president has had to rely on his surrogates to continue his campaign efforts while he recovers from COVID-19. He and his team laid out an aggressive return to political activities, including a big White House event on Saturday and a rally in Florida on Monday, a week after his hospitalization for the virus that has killed more than 210,000 Americans.

Pence will speak to supporters in Grand Rapids on Thursday.

Pence's stop in Grand Rapids will come a week after his vice presidential debate against U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, Biden's running mate. The former Indiana governor last stopped in Michigan on Aug. 28 when he spoke at a rally in Traverse City.

Biden visited Grand Rapids on Oct. 2. Grand Rapids is Michigan's second largest city and is located in Kent County, which is viewed as a crucial battleground this fall.

Trump claimed Kent County by 3 percentage points, fewer than 10,000 votes, in 2016 against Democrat Hillary Clinton. Two years later, Democrat Whitmer won Kent County by 4 percentage points, or about 11,600 votes, on her way to becoming governor.

Biden led Trump 48% to 39% in a Detroit News and WDIV poll of 600 likely voters who were surveyed over the four days following the Sept. 29 presidential debate in Cleveland.
