Oxford — Under different circumstances, reporter James Hanlon would have attended the Soup & Sweet Stroll on Dec. 3, bantering with residents as they visited downtown restaurants before the lighting of the village Christmas tree.

Instead, he went to a vigil for a tragedy so horrific it swamped downtown with mourners.
