Detroit Police: Report of shooting on northeast side false

Detroit – — A man who called police reporting that he shot an intruder was taken into custody for mental evaluation after the report turned out to be false.

“We have concerns about his mental state,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig said.

The man called police just before noon to report that four gunmen had broken into his house, in the 17000 block of Goddard on the city’s northeast side, and that he shot one of them. Police searched the house and found nothing but a small amount of marijuana and cocaine.

Police also recovered a revolver but it was unclear whether it had been fired recently. Dozens of officers responded to the scene and Craig said that was the proper protocol.

“We never want to take for granted what’s going. We can’t evaluate over the telephone if someone is making up a story,” said Craig.
