Detroit Fire Department burns through coney contest for title

Chowing down on coney dogs Thursday snagged bragging rights for the Detroit Fire Department and, even better, money for charity.

The firefighters took home the trophy in the 4th annual American Coney Island Coney Dog Eating contest, which pitted the city’s police and fire departments against each other.

About 30 contestants scarfed down Detroit’s favorite, onion-laden dogs downtown to raise funds for the charities of the departments.

The mustard-slinging battle brought out hot dog eating legend Takeru Kobayashi and even former Detroit Pistons player Rick Mahorn, who both shared tips with the coney eaters.
