Detroit — Authorities from the U.S. and Canada have arrested two U.S. citizens and seized about 1,500 pounds of contraband tobacco at the international border near Detroit.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Thursday that the Detroit-Windsor Shiprider team last week seized the water pipe tobacco with a retail value of approximately $485,000. That includes about $205,000 in evaded duties and taxes.

The Shiprider team includes Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Mounted Police officials. They say the two people transported the tobacco over the border near Ontario’s Walpole Island in northern Lake St. Clair.

The Coast Guard hasn’t released the individuals’ names or said if they’ve been charged.
