Canton Township — A 12-year-old girl reported missing Tuesday morning in Canton Township has been found safe, police said Tuesday night

Miranda Lynn Freiburg was last seen at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Cherry Hill and Lotz roads in the township, police said.

Canton Township police did not immediately release additional information, including where she was found or where she had been.

The East Middle School pupil was reported missing after she called the school about 9 a.m. to say she would be absent, according to news and social media reports.

Classmates on social media said Miranda’s school bag was found in some woods.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools issued a statement to parents about the missing girl Tuesday evening.

“We are concerned about the safety of an East Middle School student,” the statement said. “We understand our students may be upset to learn that a schoolmate is missing. We have counselors and additional support at school for students upset by this news.”

Miranda is the third Metro Detroit girl reported missing in recent weeks. In August, Ecorse police said Hayley Marie Turner, 18, of Monroe County faked her abduction, cutting herself to make it seem authentic. Turner disappeared near Temperance in Bedford Township and re-appeared the next day 50 miles away in Ecorse.

In July, the body of 14-year-old April Millsap was found along the Macomb Orchard Trail. She had been beaten and choked to death after leaving home to walk her dog on July 24.

Investigators on Tuesday searched the area near where April’s body was discovered. Police at the scene told The Detroit News their search was unrelated to Tuesday’s disappearance of Miranda Freiburg.
