Detroit police: Woman killed by man she rejected

Detroit — Detroit police say a 27-year-old woman was fatally shot at a social club on the city’s east side because she rejected a man’s advances.

WDIV-TV reports police say Mary Spears was shot in the head and killed early Sunday. They say a 38-year-old man tried to talk to her but she wasn’t interested and security escorted him outside. Police say he then opened fire on a crowd and Spears was one of the first people hit.

The gunman also wounded three women ages 23, 32 and 41 and two men ages 28 and 30. They were hit in the leg or hip and are expected to recover. Two victims remained hospitalized Monday.

Police say they arrested the gunman. It’s unclear if he’s been charged.
