Smash-and-grab robbers break into Detroit SOS office
Detroit — Police are on the look out for smash-and-grab robbers who rammed a van into a Secretary of State’s Office to steal an ATM early Friday morning.
According to the Michigan State Police, the incident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. at the SOS office at Seven Mile and Evergreen on the city’s northwest side.
State police were alerted to the theft by the Detroit Police Department, according to Lt. Michael Shaw.
“Troopers responded to the scene and preliminary investigation revealed that a dark or brown color van drove through the front of the building and person(s) removed the ATM and fled the scene,” Shaw said. “At this time, it is unknown the amount of money that was in the ATM at the time of the theft.”
According to the MSP, investigators are checking to see if the SOS office has security cameras. Anyone with information is asked to contact the State Police special investigations section at (734) 287-5000.
It’s the second time in less than a month that an ATM has been stolen from a Secretary of State office in Metro Detroit. Late Oct. 19, a van smashed into the Secretary of State location in Dearborn, heavily damaging the building. An ATM was taken from the office.
