Goodfellows honors cops for century of help at holidays

Detroit

The Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit celebrated Wednesday a century-long partnership at its annual Tribute Breakfast XXV. Honored were the men and women of the Detroit Police Department for helping to distribute gifts to disadvantaged children over the 100 years the Goodfellows have existed. Since its founding in 1914 by James Brady, about 3 million children have received holiday gift boxes stuffed with clothes, books, candy, trinkets and, for girls, a signature Goodfellow doll. The group’s goal this year is to raise $1.25 million to pay for enough items to fill 35,000 gift boxes for children in Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck, River Rouge and Harper Woods. Members will sell commemorative editions of The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press Dec. 1 throughout the area, with a goal of making sure there is “No Kiddie Without a Christmas.”
