Detroit — A man is in custody after allegedly fatally stabbing his mother early Thursday in their home on the city's east side, according to police.

The 23-year-old man called his father, who lives at another location, around 4:20 a.m. Thursday to report he had killed his mother, Captain Rodney Cox said. The father called 911 and police responded to the home on the 19000 block of Algonac, near Seven Mile and East Outer Drive.

"When the officers responded, the father was here and had assisted in detaining the son," Cox said. "The officers found the mother in the kitchen on the floor apparently deceased from fatal stab wounds."

EMS responded and pronounced the 53-year-old woman dead at the scene.

The man was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment on a "deep laceration," Cox said.

"Apparently, there was an altercation with the mother," he said.

Cox said police have been called to the house in the past, but it is unclear how many times and if it was to respond to domestic disputes or unrelated issues.

Homicide detectives were at the house Thursday morning processing the scene and interviewing neighbors.

"We're trying to get information that may help determine what may have contributed to this tragedy," Cox said.
