Wayne — Authorities say a 12-year-old boy was trying to beat an oncoming Amtrak train but underestimated its speed when it struck and killed him.

The accident happened around noon Sunday at a crossing in Wayne.

Raymond Patton of nearby Westland was a seventh grader at Franklin Middle School. Police say he and a friend decided to try to beat the train, but the friend stopped.

In a video interview, Margarete Turner tells WXYZ-TV her son hated tracks and trains and everything related to them.

The train on the Wolverine line was on its way to Chicago with 92 passengers, plus crew members. Amtrak says no one aboard the train was injured.
