A 16-year-old from Detroit was critically injured on Christmas Day after he was accidentally shot in the head while playing with friends at his home, city police said.

The teen was with his companions, ages 19 and 17, in the basement of the home in the 4100 block of Virginia Park about 1:30 p.m., said officer Jennifer Moreno of the Detroit Police Department.

“They were playing with the gun and the gun went off and a round struck the 16-year-old in the head,” she said.

It wasn’t immediately clear who pulled the trigger, Moreno said. No one else was injured.

The teen was rushed to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

His friends, also of Detroit, were detained and questioned pending further investigation, Moreno said.
