College student shot, killed talking in car in Detroit

Detroit police continue to investigate the shooting death last week of a 22-year-old woman who was killed when two gunman opened fire as she sat with a friend in a car.

Christina Samuel was talking in the parked car south of 8 Mile near Gratiot when two men approached the car just after midnight Dec. 26, police said. One of the men was armed with a long gun and another with a handgun. Both fired several shots at the vehicle, said Officer Adam Madera, Detroit Police spokesman.

Her friend, a 24-year-old man, was also shot and remains hospitalized, Madera said.

The motive for the shooting is unclear, he said.

“She was coming back from school from what I understand and it’s a friend she visits when she’s in town,” Madera said. “They were sitting and talking as far as we can gather.”

Published reports said Samuel was a recent graduate from Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Ind. and was set to start graduate school next month at the university.
