Detroit — A 23-year-old man was fatally shot New Year’s Eve when he and another man attempted an armed robbery, police said.

Around 7:35 p.m. Wednesday, a 44-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were sitting in a car in the 19700 block of Appoline when two men armed with a shotgun walked up and announced a robbery.

The 44-year-old man, who has a valid license to carry a concealed weapon, fired one round hitting one of the suspects in the chest, police said.

“The one suspect dragged the other suspect back to the car, drove him to the hospital and fled the location from there,” said Officer Jennifer Moreno of the Detroit Police Department.

The 23-year-old suspect was pronounced dead at Sinai-Grace Hospital.

Police are looking for the other suspect whose identity is unknown, Moreno said.
