Bashara to be sentenced Thursday in wife’s death
Detroit — Robert Bashara is scheduled to be sentenced to life in prison Thursday, after a jury found him guilty last month of first-degree murder in connection with the slaying of his wife, Jane.
The victim’s family will be given a chance to address the court before Wayne Circuit Judge Vonda Evans reads the mandatory life sentence into the record. Bashara also will get a chance to speak, if he wishes.
The trial lasted several weeks, and had several twists and turns, including lurid testimony from Bashara’s acquaintances from the bondage, discipline and sadomasochistic community.
Prosecutors said the Grosse Pointe Park businessman hired his handyman, Joseph Gentz, to kill his wife so he could live the BDSM lifestyle full-time with his longtime girlfriend, Rachel Gillett.
