Canton Township — Investigators are working to discover the cause of a fire that killed one person at a mobile home park early Wednesday morning.

Police detectives are trying to determine the sex and identity of the person who died in the blaze, which occurred at about 4:15 a.m. at the Wagon Wheel Mobile Home Park, located on the 51000 block of Mott, between Michigan and Geddes.

“We responded, along with the police department, and found the front half of the mobile home fully engulfed in flames,” Canton Fire Chief Joshua Meier said. “Witnesses said there was one person inside. We entered through the rear of the structure where we encountered high heat and fire conditions.

“We pushed as far as we could but then the roof collapsed and all the firefighters were called out of the structure.”

Firefighters extinguished the fire and re-entered the home.

“We did a secondary search and found the victim shortly thereafter,” Meier said. “At this time, we don’t know if it’s a man or a woman.”

According to Meier, two people were living at the home but only one was at home when the fire broke out.

A search of the home showed that it had no working smoke or fire detectors.

“Smoke detectors can make all the difference when it comes to fire safety,” Meier said.

According to Meier, this is the first fire fatality in the city in 2015. The city recorded one fire fatality in 2014.
