Detroit — A Detroit woman was arraigned Monday on a first-degree murder charge in the choking death of her 2-year-old son.

Priyanka Chakraborty, 26, is also charged with felony murder and one count of child abuse. She appeared in 36th District Court, where she was given a $500,000, 10 percent bond.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday afternoon it is “filing an emergency motion since under the law she must be remanded to jail.”

The incident allegedly occurred about 8:20 a.m. Friday at Chakraborty’s home in the 5000 block of Sobieski Street on the city’s east side.

Police arrived at the home after receiving a report that the boy was not breathing.

“We responded to the scene, and the child was unresponsive so we transported him to a local hospital,” said Detroit Police Chief James Craig in an earlier interview. “A preliminary determination was made that force may have been used that resulted in the child’s death.”

Chakraborty was arrested by police that same day.

Chakraborty returns to court Feb. 18 for a probable cause hearing before District Court Judge Ronald Giles.

The incident is at least the third in the past week involving family violence in Detroit. On Feb. 2, a 14-year-old boy was arrested after allegedly stabbing his 18-year-old brother.

Also on that day, a 38-year-old woman allegedly shot her husband to death and also shot her 8-year-old daughter, who is expected to recover.
