Couple, 83 and 84, die in Westland fire

Westland — Authorities in Westland said a couple in their 80s died when a fire swept through their Westland home.

Authorities didn’t immediately release the names of the victims, ages 83 and 84, WDIV-TV said. Officials said a neighbor spotted the fire and called authorities about 3:45 a.m. Sunday.

Assistant fire marshal Kelly Eggers said the man ran up to the house and tried to help but it was too hot to enter.

Officials said it appears an electrical problem caused the fire, which started in a bedroom. Eggers say the house had smoke detectors.
