Monster trucks and dinosaurs invade Detroit

Detroit –

There was big fun on display Friday in two downtown venues, as children got an up-close look at monster trucks and gigantic dinosaur models.

Thirty students from the all-girls Detroit International Academy and the all-boys Frederick Douglass Academy were invited to Ford Field to meet Monster Jam drivers and mechanics to learn how the massive machines are built and engineered.

“I'm not scared of him,” says Tucker Langtry, 6, about the Tyrannosaurus rex. He admits he got a little nervous around a pack of raptors around the corner at Discover the Dinosaurs at Cobo Center.

The visit, made as part of the schools' science, technology, engineering and math curriculum, was meant to encourage interest in automotive engineering and repair fields. The Monster Jam truck rally is at 7 p.m. Saturday at Ford Field.

At Cobo Center, visitors toured the opening day of the Discover the Dinosaurs show, which continues from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit includes interactive scenes that represent dinosaurs from various time periods, using special lighting, sound effects, animatronics and fog.
