A suspect was in custody Monday night after an apartment fire in Detroit that displaced at least 18 residents, investigators said.

Authorities were not releasing details about the suspect or describing the blaze Monday as arson; the incident still was under investigation, fire investigation Capt. Winston Farrow said.

The fire was reported about 4:55 p.m. in the 13800 block of LaSalle, near West Davison and the Lodge Freeway, and affected mainly the first and second floors of the building, which has about 24 units, he said.

“The whole building was affected by smoke but not necessarily but fire,” he said.

Authorities believe 11 of the units had people home at the time. Farrow said some of the residents have disabilities.

The American Red Cross, Southeast Michigan Chapter was offering food, shelter, emotional support and recovery plan guidance to 18 residents, spokeswoman Jennifer Roberts said.

No injuries were reported in the fire, and surrounding buildings were not affected, Farrow said.
