Gibraltar police said a suspect in an alleged assault died Thursday after an officer used a Taser during his arrest.

Police were dispatched to the 14000 block of Gibraltar Road about 3:20 a.m. A male was "out of control and assaulting the caller's mother," the department said in a statement.

Officers on scene confronted the suspect and while trying to take him into custody, a Taser was deployed, police said.

The suspect then "began to show signs of medical complications," police said. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

In the statement Thursday, police said a preliminary investigation "shows that all department policies and procedures in this incident were followed and the officer's use of force was justified."

Meanwhile, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, police said.

The investigation has been turned over to Michigan State Police Special Investigation Section.

"Detectives from the SIS are currently conduction interviews, collecting evidence and awaiting autopsy results," according to a Michigan State Police statement. "This complaint will be turned over the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for their review when completed."

Gibraltar police did not name the suspect or release additional information Thursday night.
