A portion of brick facade at a Livonia strip mall came falling down Wednesday afternoon causing "a lot of commotion," according to fire officials.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. at a strip mall with several business at Five Mile and Merriman. No one was hurt.

The brickwork that fell was about 150 feet long and more decorative than structural, said Cpt. Jon Unruh of the Livonia Fire Department.

"We're really fortunate that there were no injuries," Unruh said.

About four cars parked nearby were damaged.

The Livonia Building Department will investigate if there is any structural damage to the building, Unruh said. A contractor was securing the area with fencing Wednesday afternoon and will remove the debris.

The affected businesses are a liquor store, nail salon, cellphone store and a pizzeria, Unruh said. He said he doubts the businesses will be able to reopen Thursday.
