Illinois man arraigned in Romulus Amber Alert carjacking
An Illinois man was arraigned Monday after a carjacking in Romulus that led to an Amber Alert early Saturday morning, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office.
Jawaan E. Johnson, 23, of Markum, Illinois, was arraigned Monday in 34th District Court in Romulus on two counts of carjacking, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and larceny.
Around 2:23 a.m. Saturday Johnson allegedly carjacked a 24-year-old woman in the 31100 block of Flynn Drive in Romulus and “intentionally drove off with her 16-month-old child,” according to the prosecutor’s office.
Police issued an Amber Alert and a witness told police a man matching Johnson’s description was on foot near Merriman and Michigan Avenue. Police arrested Johnson and later found the child, Ayden Casteels, unharmed.
Ayden’s mother, Marrianne Casteels, told police she, her boyfriend and child were carjacked after they returned to the Howard Johnson hotel after getting something to eat.
Johnson received a $100,000 cash bond. He returns to court for a probable cause hearing May 27 and a preliminary examination June 6.
