A Wednesday event hosted by a Wayne County commissioner aims to help military veterans finish school, find jobs and get their military benefits.

The Veterans, Families & Caretakers Event will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hubert-Fortiers-O’Grady VFW Post 345, 27345 Schoolcraft in Redford Township.

Wayne County Commissioner Diane Webb, D-Livonia, is hosting the free event, now in its fourth year.

“This is a great chance to learn about programs that are available and for veterans to get the help that they deserve,” Webb said in a statement.

Veterans can get help with education, employment programs and health care benefits and claims. More than 30 veterans service organizations and agencies will be at the event.

State Sen. David Knezek, D-Dearborn Heights, and retired U.S. Marine 1st Sgt. Troy Schielein will address veterans.

Knezek, a retired U.S. Marine Corps sergeant and an Iraq War veteran, will speak about legislative initiatives on behalf of veterans.

Schielein, a member of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency’s Veterans Community Action Team, will discuss Wayne County services for veterans.

He also will talk about how the action team, which focuses on finding solutions for gaps in veterans services, reducing duplication of efforts and simplifying connections with local resources, plans to expand throughout the state and Wayne County.
