Trial set for October in Inkster police beating case
Detroit — A police officer seen on video repeatedly punching a motorist in the head during a suburban Detroit traffic stop is scheduled for trial this fall.
The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says court dates were set on Friday for William Melendez. He remains free on bond.
A court conference will take place Aug. 14 and the trial date is Oct. 5.
A judge earlier sent the case to trial after watching the video in her office and listening to the testimony of Floyd Dent, the 57-year-old man who was pummeled.
Melendez was fired as an Inkster officer but denies wrongdoing. A $1.4 million settlement has been reached between Dent and the city.
