Harper Woods Police say a teenage bicyclist has died after being struck Friday night by a vehicle wile trying to cross Harper Road.

The Harper Woods Department of Public Safety, in a statement released Saturday, said it appears that the 18-year-old Harper Woods man was attempting to cross southbound Harper from the Woodside overpass around 7 p.m. when he was struck.

Jim Burke, director of public safety, said the department and Medstar paramedics responded to the scene and transported the injured cyclist to a local hospital. He was in critical condition upon arrival and died over night.

Michigan State Police are aiding Harper Woods detectives in the investigation, he said.

“We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the young man,” Burke said in a released statement.

Police say the driver of the vehicle was not injured and it doesn’t appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident. No charges have been issued at this time.
