An 18-year-old man died Wednesday after he allegedly ran onto Interstate 94 and was hit, Harper Woods authorities said.

The city’s Department of Public Safety fielded several calls shortly before 5 p.m. about the man “running on I-94 in traffic,” director Jim Burke said in a statement.

“Preliminary information is that the man ran down the embankment from (northbound) Harper near Kingsville onto the freeway and ran across all three lanes of (eastbound) I-94,” the release read. “The man then jumped the wall and stood in front of oncoming traffic on (westbound) I-94 near Kenosha.”

The man, identified as a Grosse Pointe Woods resident, was struck by a large semi-trailer and fatally injured, authorities said.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of this young man,” Burke said in the statement.

Harper Woods detectives are investigating the incident with help from the Michigan State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
