Livonia — Shortly after noon Wednesday, police reopened westbound Interstate 96 at Merriman after shutting it down completely due to a two-vehicle crash that occurred just before 6 a.m.

A car and a trash hauler collided, causing the car to catch on fire and the truck to overturn and flood the freeway with fuel. Two people reportedly received nonlife threatening injuries in the crash.

During the shutdown, traffic on WB I-96 was backed up as far as Inkster Road.

The incident remains under investigation.
