Michigan House panel considers ban on mobile phone use while driving

Panel: New Wayne Co. Treasurer applications due Oct. 16

Detroit —A three-member panel of Wayne County officials has set an Oct. 16 deadline to submit applications for county treasurer.

Wayne County Chief Probate Judge Freddie G. Burton Jr., Wayne County Clerk Cathy M. Garrett and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy met Monday at to discuss the process and time frame for the treasurer’s appointment.

The meeting came less than a week after Wayne County Treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz announced he was retiring from the office after nearly 40 years. Wojtowicz, 86, a Democrat and former mayor of Hamtramck, was last elected to the office in 2012.

He earns a salary of $116,000.

Garrett said her office’s Elections Division will receive applications from interested job candidates. The address for the division is 2 Woodward Ave., Suite 502, Detroit, MI 48226.

Each member of the panel is to review all of the applications received and select potential candidates for interviews. The panel is scheduled to meet Oct. 22 to submit their recommendations for applicants to be interviewed during public meetings.

Interviews are set to begin the first week of November. “The blocks of time for interviews will be scattered because of our calendars,” Burton said.

In the meantime, Garrett said her office will issue a public notice about the job opening and the deadline for applicants in the coming week.
