Christopher Duran Head, 45, has been charged with second-degree murder after police say his 9-year-old son found a shotgun in his home and fatally shot himself.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said Head also has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse, as well as weapons charges for owning a short-barreled shotgun and for owning a gun as a felon.

He was arraigned Thursday morning at 36th District Court and will be in the Wayne County Jail until his case is adjudicated.

Head is next scheduled for a probable cause hearing at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 19 before Judge Shannon A. Holmes at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice. Then at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Eve, Head will face a preliminary examination, also in front of Holmes.

Daylen Makhai Head shot himself in the head in his bedroom about 12:36 p.m. on the 6600 block of Barton on Detroit’s west side.

His father is alleged to have possessed the loaded shotgun the boy used. The gun was not secured and was accessible to the child.

At the time, Detroit Police Chief James Craig instructed parents to keep the guns locked up and out of access of children.

“This should never happen,” he said.
