Eastland Mall shooting victim identified
Harper Woods — An 18-year-old Detroit man who was fatally shot at Eastland Mall Saturday night has been identified, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.
Tyrell Lane died of multiple gunshot wounds, medical examiner spokesman Lloyd Jackson confirmed. The death was ruled a homicide.
Lane was shot around 5:50 p.m. Saturday as he walked out of Burlington Coat Factory at the mall, police said Saturday.
Contrary to previous reports that a suspect was in custody, Harper Wood Public Safety Department officials on Sunday said that one suspect was held at the scene by police and taken to the department for questioning. But that person was released early Sunday pending further investigation.
"Detectives are continuing their investigation," said Jim Burke, director of public safety.
The mall was on lockdown for a few hours after the shooting outside Burlington Coat Factory. Lane died at a local hospital.
Police are asking anyone who may have information or who witnessed the crime to contact the Harper Woods police or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAKUP.
